Portable and modular buildings for waste recycling centres

Waste recycling centres, whether commercial or public, can be harsh environments. The sites have heavy traffic in terms of vehicles and pedestrians and there will always be bulky, potentially dirty  items being moved and dragged around. Recycling sites need buildings for several purposes, including office facilities, welfare facilities for staff and often internal storage areas for certain recyclables.

GCS have been supplying portable and modular buildings to recycling facilities across the country for many years. We have supplied on a ‘one off’ site basis but also supply to companies such as BIFFA for many of the sites they run for councils across the country, for example. The varying needs of different sites and customers has enabled us to build up an extensive knowledge base of what a recycling site requires and the best off site constructed buildings to meet these requirements.

Why use a portable or modular building on a recycling site?

Within a waste & recycling site, the wants and needs for internal space are varied. From weigh bridge control rooms, staff welfare space with showers, to office space and recycled goods internal storage, there are limitless possibilities for utilising an off-site constructed building because a pre constructed building can easily accommodate all of these varied uses.

In addition, the layout of sites can sometimes need to change  to accommodate different recycling vehicles using the site or different types of recycling being added. A portable building can move with the changing needs of the site. All of our portable buildings can be quickly moved should the need arise, creating the minimum interruption to the smooth running of the site. Modular buildings are a little more fixed to the position they are placed due to the foundations required.

Recycling sites are usually open seven days a week and are often busy from the moment they open to the time they close at the end of the day. Installing new buildings must fit in with this schedule and cause as little disruption as possible. The vast majority of our portable buildings can be dropped into place by crane with the minimum of disruption to the working of the site. When you compare this to the alternative of using a typical bricks and mortar building where a portion of the site would need to be cordoned off for several months whilst the new building was built, it’s easy to see the advantage of using a portable building. Modular buildings require a little more planning, however, the installation is still a quick process and would require minimal disruption.
